Our Traffic Management Design 1 Course (TMD 1) is the perfect starting point for individuals looking to develop traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes in Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 environments; urban streets and low volume roads.

Skills Covered: Carry out the risk management process and prepare traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes.

Entry Requirements: To enrol in our Traffic Management Design 1 Course, prospective learners must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of any of the following skill sets:
    • RIISSS00060 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads; or
    • RIISSS00061 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for High Volume Roads; or
    • RIISSS00062 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Motorways and Freeways; and
  • With at least 12 months of experience applying the relevant skills and knowledge in a temporary traffic management workplace; and
  • Providing evidence of relevant experience setting up at least 20 temporary traffic management types in at least four of the following design types:
    • pedestrian and cyclist controls
    • construction sites
    • lane closures
    • shoulder closures
    • night works
    • use of portable traffic control devices
    • motorways or freeways.

OR

  • At least an AQF Level 6 qualification in a civil construction, traffic engineering or road design related field.

OR

  • Entry requirements specifically detailed in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management.
    As per entry requirements in Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management Part 8, which are: For existing workers during a jurisdiction’s transition phase to the Temporary Traffic Management National Training Framework for RIISS00063 – Traffic Management Designer skill set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads ONLY:
    • Must be currently permitted in their jurisdiction, prior to the jurisdictional adoption date, to develop, review or audit traffic management designs or traffic guidance schemes, and
    • Must provide evidence of currency of practice. This must demonstrate that in the past 3 years the applicant has designed, or reviewed, or audited a minimum of 12 TMPs or 12 TGSs. The TMPs or TGSs must include a minimum of four different worksite locations that are within the relevant jurisdiction. These worksite locations may include TTM Category 1 or TTM Category 2 or TTM Category 3 roads or sections of the network.

Training and Assessment: The Traffic Management Designer 1 (TMD 1) training and assessment will be carried out through a combination of theoretical learning and practical experience. The theoretical course will take three days to complete. Following the three theoretical days, students will need to successfully complete a practical assessment with a licenced traffic management company.

The practical (post-course) assessment requirements must be completed for declared Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 roads within 6 months of successfully completing the theoretical component. We offer all eligible students placement with Barleys Traffic Management.
